Privacy Policy
1. Who we are
"Jewish Alarm Clock" is an independent Android app providing halachic times, a siddur, an alarm clock, a Hebrew calendar, a minyan finder and daily learning. It is operated by the app's developer ("we"). You can reach us at JewishAlarmClock@gmail.com.
2. What information is collected and why
We do not run servers of our own and receive no user information. The following is stored on your device only:
- Settings and alarms — your chosen city, calculation method, siddur version, font, alarms, Shabbat mode and display preferences.
- Personal dates — birthdays, anniversaries, yahrzeits and other dates you entered, for the calendar and reminders.
- Your personal minyan list — synagogues and prayer times you added yourself.
- Reading history and learning progress — "continue reading", Shnayim Mikra "done" marks, bookmarks.
- Approximate location — if you allow location access, the app uses it to find the nearest locality for calculating times and to find a minyan nearby. Location is not stored as a history and is not sent to us.
The app does not collect names, email addresses, contacts, photos, advertising IDs or usage data, and contains no analytics or crash-reporting libraries.
3. Third-party services that receive information
To provide certain features, the app contacts the following services directly from your device. Each request carries only what that feature needs. These services have their own privacy policies, and we do not control how they process data.
| Service | When | What is sent |
|---|---|---|
| GoDaven (godaven.com) | Using "Find a minyan" | Coordinates (latitude/longitude) and search radius |
| Nedarim Plus — prayer-times project (matara.pro) | Using "Find a minyan" | Coordinates and search radius |
| OpenStreetMap — Nominatim and Overpass | "Find a minyan" and locality name lookup | Coordinates |
| Sefaria (sefaria.org) | Opening a book, daily learning and "Ask the sources" | The requested book/source, or the search text you typed |
| Hebcal (hebcal.com) | Loading some calendar data | Date and region (Israel/diaspora) only |
| Google Play Billing | Donating from within the app | Payment is handled entirely by Google. We receive only a confirmation that the donation was made (to show a "donor" badge), with no payment details |
| Google Play (in-app updates) | Checking for a new version | The app ID and installed version, via Google Play services |
| Google Maps / Waze (via link) | Tapping "Navigate" to a synagogue | The destination opens in the navigation app you chose |
As with any internet communication, your device's IP address is visible to these services.
4. Permissions the app requests
- Location — to find your locality for halachic times and nearby minyanim. You can decline and choose a city manually. Location is checked only while the app is open — never in the background.
- Notifications, exact alarms, run at startup, full screen — so alarms and reminders fire on time, even when the device is locked or after a restart.
- Ignore battery optimization — so the system doesn't delay alarms.
- Calendar (read and write) — only if you turn on syncing holidays and personal dates to the device calendar. The app reads and writes only the events it created.
- Internet — for the services listed in section 3.
- Display over other apps — to show the ringing screen.
- Vibrate, audio settings, wake lock — to play the alarm at the volume you set.
- Purchases (Google Play Billing) — for a voluntary one-time donation.
5. Storage, backup and deletion
- All data is stored on the device. Uninstalling the app deletes it.
- If Android app backup is on, your settings may be backed up to your Google account by the operating system, encrypted, and restored on a new device. This backup is managed by Google under your device settings and is not accessible to us.
- You can delete personal dates, personal minyanim and reading history inside the app, or clear all data via Settings › Apps › Jewish Alarm Clock › Storage.
6. Children
The app is intended for a general audience and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since it collects no identifying details at all, we hold no data to delete; if you have any concern, please contact us.
7. Your rights
Because we hold no personal information about you, the rights to access, correct and delete are exercised directly on your device (see section 5). For any privacy question or request, we'll gladly help at the address below.
8. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. A material change (for example, adding a service that receives information) will also be shown inside the app under "What's new".
